Tampa General Hospital: Artificial Intelligence – Dream or Dilemma?

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in healthcare delivery, institutions must navigate complex decisions about how to adopt and govern these technologies responsibly.

This case study examines Tampa General Hospital’s (TGH) strategic crossroads in AI adoption, focusing on the efforts of its Director of Digital Innovation, Anthony Zalet, to establish an enterprise-wide framework for evaluating and deploying AI solutions. Rather than selecting a vendor based solely on product features, TGH grapples with broader questions of institutional readiness, risk governance, and long-term oversight. Drawing on stakeholder interviews, industry benchmarks, and comparative vendor analysis, this study outlines a governance-oriented approach to AI integration that addresses critical dimensions such as patient data privacy, algorithmic bias, regulatory compliance, and clinician trust. The case proposes a structured, repeatable model for AI evaluation and post-deployment monitoring, positioning TGH as a potential leader in ethical and scalable AI governance. Ultimately, this study contributes to the growing discourse on how healthcare organizations can pursue innovation without compromising safety, equity, or public trust.
